Does Harvest Weed Seed Control Work in Rice Fields?

Texas researchers want to know how harvest weed seed control tactics such as the integrated Harrington Seed Destructor (iHSD) work in rice fields.

Sarah Chu, a Ph.D. student in weed science at Texas A&M, is working on a research project with Texas farmer Bryan Wiese this season, under the direction of Texas A&M Weed Scientist Muthu Bagavathiannan.

As the video below shows, they have attached an iHSD to a Case IH combine, and run it through some rice fields at harvest with the seed-crushing mill turned on and off to see how weed control looks next year. In the video, Chu talks about what kind of data they are collecting and why the grass weeds that plague rice fields might be a good fit for harvest weed seed control.
