Spring brings a lot of management decisions for farmers who use cover crops, from juggling termination timing to managing planters in high-residue crops.

Fortunately, GROW has farmers on tap across the country ready to help you out!

Take some time to review these six GROW videos where experienced and innovative farmers dig into all these cover cropping decisions and more.

Farmer Forums Dive Into Termination and Seeding

In GROW Farmer Forums, growers lead webinars and answer questions on how they use integrated weed management in their own farming operations. The following two forums tackle common cover crop management questions.

Cover Crop Termination: In this 2023 forum,  farmers from Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Virginia converged to talk about how they handle terminating their cover crops each spring.

Their conversation gave listeners an in-depth explanation of their cover crop termination methods and targets (from cereal rye monocultures to large cover crop mixes) within corn, soybean, cotton and small grains row cropping operations. The farmers discussed planting green, how cover crops can reduce herbicide use, and how to terminate cover crops late for more weed-suppressing biomass.

Cover Crop Seeding: In the summer of 2023, this cover crop seeding Farmer Forum launched, featuring Delaware, New York, and Texas farmers who work in a variety of crops, from corn and soybeans to lima beans, sweetcorn, edamame, and sunflowers. They walk viewers through their on-farm cover crop seeding processes, including using as many as sixteen species in a cover crop mixture.

Dig into this forum for more details on buying and selling cover crop seed, using cover crop mixes for multiple benefits, cover crop seeding rates, methods, and timing.

Farmer Case Studies on Planting Green & Dealing with Residue

Looking for more detailed information on cover crop practices such as planting green? Some of GROW’s Farmer Case Studies dive into a Maryland farmer’s hard-earned expertise with planting into high-residue cover crops.

Here, Trey Hill of Harborview Farms discusses how he uses planting green to manage weeds, and then dives deeper into the best way to set up both a corn and soybean planter to handle residue at planting time

Looking for more help on juggling both weed and nutrient management from a cover crop? Check out Virginia farmer Clay Lowe’s work using strategic cover crop mixes and termination timing to maximize weed suppression and nitrogen availability in his diverse crop rotation of cotton, peanuts, soybeans and small grains.

Finally, for an overview of the roll-crimping technology available, as well as the best way to use it for your different weed management and planting goals, review this popular GROW video on roller crimpers
