Heading to the Field to Scout? Take Us With You!

As you head into the field to scout early season weeds, remember to keep GROW’s scouting resources handy!

Remember the basic principles of scouting — the where, what, when and how are all discussed on the GROW Scouting page, and this news article covers why starting the season weed-free at planting is so important.

GROW’s Weed ID & Management Library

When it comes time to identify what you’re seeing, keep the following resources in mind:

The GROW Weed ID & Management Library — this library houses pages on dozens of broadleaf and grass weed species, with sections on identification, life cycle, herbicide management and IWM tactics for each one. The library grows each year, so if you don’t see the weed you’re looking for, let us know!

The Take Action Factsheet Page — these soy checkoff-funded factsheets cover management and herbicide recommendations for 14 troublesome weed species in soybean production.

Weed Identification Apps — The human eye has its limits, and that’s where these apps come in! This page lists five popular ones, as well as a review of them by Michigan State University weed scientist Erin Hill, to help guide your selection.

If mobile apps aren’t your style, don’t worry. The GROW Weed Identification page also lists browser-based weed identification databases, online photo galleries and some print publications, organized by region!

Grasses are a particularly tricky group of weeds to identify early in the season. For extra help, see this GROW video on identifying summer annual weeds in grain crops when they are still small.

Finally, before you go, remember to check out GROW’s Weed Prevention page, which has some timely reminders of the sneaky ways weed seeds can move around your operation throughout the year, when you least expect it.

Happy scouting!
