Take the Guesswork Out of Precision Spray Tech with this ROI Calculator

Are you interested in precision spray technology, but not sure that you can afford it? Well, you’re not alone. That’s why Montana State University’s Precision Ag Program just unveiled their precision spray return on investment (ROI) calculator.

The Smart Spray Annual ROI Calculator provides return on investment estimates for annual conventional sprayer costs versus precision sprayer costs. The calculator, which went live in May 2025, allows farmers to specify 11 factors in their production to estimate their potential returns on precision spray technology. These factors include:

  • Acreage
  • Weed pressure
  • Herbicide costs
  • Herbicide passes 
  • Labor costs
  • Precision ag system costs and/or subscription costs

The calculator rolled out just a year after Montana State’s Precision Ag program debuted, led by Montana State Assistant Professor Dr. Ricardo Pinto

“The first thing I did before I started my program was come to the field and conduct a needs assessment to understand what producers from the region wanted my program to focus on,” Pinto says. During that assessment, farmers expressed interest in targeted spray technology and how much it could reduce their operations’ costs. 

Where Can the Calculator Be Used? 

The short answer? Everywhere. 

Farmers and Extension agents across the U.S. can use the calculator. Want estimates for both fallow and in-crop fields? This calculator does both, and can accommodate every precision spray system from drone-based targeted spraying to systems that operate on a subscription.  

The calculator can also handle  “what if” scenarios, Pinto says. This means that farmers can anticipate what their returns would be as their weed pressure decreases over time. The results could motivate farmers to use more herbicide modes of action when spot spraying because of the reduced costs, lowering the risk of herbicide resistance. 

Using the Calculator

Montana State’s website provides directions for using the calculator, and each calculator input has an information bubble that explains exactly how a farmer should calculate that factor. The “Calculation Documentation” link at the bottom of the calculator explains how each production-specific input factors into the overall ROI estimate. 

The calculator does have some limitations; it is only as precise as the numbers entered. Input factors like weed coverage are estimates, so the ROI results should be seen as a guide rather than an exact figure, Pinto explains. 

Early feedback from calculator users is promising. “The calculator has been live for two months and during my conversations with Extension county agents, it’s really helping them initiate a conversation and show the impact of precision ag for the producers,” Pinto says.

The team is also developing another calculator meant to help farmers determine the best settings for their precision spray system, such as nozzle type and fan angle.
